Why don’t some special characters display correctly in my video?

If certain special characters (such as Chinese, Japanese, or Arabic letters, or specific symbols) don’t display correctly in your PlayPlay video, it usually means that the font you’re using doesn’t include those characters. In that case, empty squares (“□”) will appear instead of the expected text.

1. Why does this happen?

PlayPlay supports all fonts and special characters, as long as the selected font actually includes those characters:

  • Each font has its own character set: some are limited to the Latin alphabet, while others include extended scripts (Arabic, Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese, etc.).

  • To make sure your font supports the characters you need, you can check it using the free tool FontDrop, which shows exactly which characters are available in a given font.

2. How to fix the issue?

1️⃣ Check which font you’re using in your text.

2️⃣ If the font you’re using doesn’t support certain characters, replace it with a compatible one in your branding, then update your project by following our articles:

💡 Try using a universal font such as Noto Sans or Roboto, which cover a wide range of languages and symbols. These fonts are also part of our default selection in PlayPlay.

3️⃣ Refresh your project preview after changing the font to make sure the characters display correctly.

Note: You can download free fonts that support multiple alphabets from trusted websites such as Google Fonts, DaFont, or Font Squirrel.

  • If you’re creating multilingual videos, use fonts known for their international compatibility.

  • For best results, avoid decorative or custom fonts that often include only a limited character set.

  • Before adding a custom font to your branding, make sure it includes all the special characters you need.
