What should I do if the color of my video media (filmed in HDR) changes after uploading it into my project?

If, after importing a video into your project, you notice a washed-out filter or a color desaturation, in this case, it is likely caused by the activation of HDR mode on your capturing device.

👉 What is HDR?

HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a technology that enhances image quality by capturing and displaying a broader range of contrasts, providing richer details in the dark and bright areas of a video.

Currently, PlayPlay struggles to support this technology.

👉 What is the workaround?

To achieve satisfactory results on the platform, we invite you to re-encode your media.

Here are the steps to follow:

  • Open iMovie (included for free on Mac).
  • Create a new project and drag your media into the project timeline.
  • Export the video by going to File (top left) and choosing Share > File.
  • Make sure the resolution is set to 1080p, then leave the information as it is and click "Next."
  • Choose a backup location.
  • Click "Save" to export the re-encoded video.
  • Wait for the file to be exported to the desktop.
  • Import the media into the PlayPlay media library!
  • Select the file you want to re-encode or click on Open Source.
  • Make sure the preset is set to Fast 1080p30.
  • Under the Video tab, ensure the Video Encoder is set to H.264 (x264).
  • Choose the backup location.
  • Press Start to initiate the re-encoding.
  • Wait until the process is complete.
  • Import the media into the PlayPlay media library!

If these steps do not resolve the issue, we invite you to contact the Support Team via chat.

  • If you upload your video media into your media library directly from your smartphone using the dedicated feature, there should be no rendering issues.
  • To avoid the need for re-encoding, we strongly recommend deactivating the HDR mode on your device. For example, for iPhones, here are the steps.
