How do I reduce the size of a GIF?

You can create a GIF from your PlayPlay video, but the size of the downloaded GIF may be too large to insert it in your newsletter/email or publish it. It is recommended that you do not exceed 10MB in size for your GIFs, as this type of format can be very heavy in an email box, and therefore take a long time to load.

Here are some tips on how to limit the weight of your GIF while creating your video or compress your GIF after downloading it.

1. Limit the size of my GIF on PlayPlay

To limit the size of your GIF, keep the animation of your GIF as simple as possible. Limit the number of images that make up your GIF and the amount of elements that change from one image to the next.

Here are a few things to avoid to keep your video as light as possible when exporting to GIF format (in addition to the selection of the resolution and smoothness with our dedicated feature):

Avoid

Prefer

Long video (more than 10 seconds)

Short video (less than 10 seconds)

Color contrast and color gradient

Solid colors and colors with similar tones

Moving elements: video media, animated icons and shapes

Static elements: images, photos, illustrations, static icons...

White background

Colored or black background

Keep transitions

Screens with a lot of animations, like the screens of the Catchline category

Simple screens, with few animations, like the Title or Text category screens.

Example to avoid

SHR_VID_ReduceGIF-EN-1.gif

GIF size : 5.03 MO (5150.72 KO)

Example to be preferred

SHR_VID_ReduceGIF-EN-2.gif

GIF size : 856.43 KO (0.85 MO)

Don't hesitate to duplicate your video to create a lighter version that you will export in GIF format, thanks to the recommendations above.

2. Compress your GIF

Another solution if you want to keep your GIF as it is, without making any changes to your video on PlayPlay to reduce its size: compress it.

⚠️ Be careful: compressing your GIF may result in a loss of quality.

The online tool Ezgif, for example, offers you to do it for free.
